"More Than Conquerors through Him"

Junior year of high school a very popular girl I had known since elementary school informed her close LDS friend and me that her mother grew up as a Mormon but left the Church as a teenager after her mother died of an illness. She didn't understand why God would allow such a thing to happen.

I was shocked and saddened, first of all that this girl I had known for years had LDS ties, and second, that she could have lived a completely different life had her mother stayed true to the gospel. Her mother obviously did not understand the plan of salvation.

Unfortunately, she is not alone. Many doubt the existence of a God who allows suffering and wickedness and thus come to the conclusion that there is no God, or if there is, He is not the wonderful Being we believe Him to be.

This morning I read an April 2011 General Conference talk by Elder Paul V. Johnson, who shared this scripture:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . .
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (Romans 8:35, 37)

Paul's words should be our own when we are faced with unexpected trials or anything else that shakes our faith. We can be "more than conquerors" through the Atonement of Christ--we can be exalted with Him!

Challenge: Don't let anything separate you from the love of Christ.

For more discussion on the reason for trials, read "Why Bad Things Happen to Good People" and "For God So Loved the World."

New URL Coming Soon To Avoid Using "Mormon"

photo by ilker In light of President Nelson's talk in October 2018 general conference , I will be changing the title and address of this blog very soon to eliminate the use of the word "Mormon." Because I won't be buying a domain name, I don't know what the new URL and blog name will be yet. I'm not very literate in the website world, so please bear with me as I roll out these changes. I'm trying to learn as much as I can quickly to reduce broken links and errors. Thank you, and I hope you keep reading my blog!

"Be Thou an Example of the Believers" at Home

Today, my husband and I spoke in sacrament meeting. Here is the first part of my talk ( read Part 2  and Part 3 ): “The effect of our words and acts is tremendous in this world. Every moment of life you are changing to a degree the lives of the whole world.” Those are the words of President David O. McKay.* If we have such an astounding influence over the world, we need to be examples of righteousness. As Paul counseled, “Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. . . . Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in so doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee” (1 Timothy 4:12, 16). The Lord said, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also” (John 14:12). So to be an example of the believers is to do what the Lord has done so that we can “save [ourselves], and them that hear [us].” We usually apply this principle to missionary work, but it also e...

Recognizing Pornography

My Relief Society president shared that her biggest fear is her sons viewing pornography. It is sad she has to fear this, especially since her sons are only four and five. But my former bishop shared--to my shock and dismay--that nowadays it is at this young and innocent age that many boys get trapped into the sticky web of pornography. Knowing the lifestyle of this woman and her family, I am confident she will succeed in raising young men who do not actively search for X-rated material. However, pornography is not always directly labeled so. It comes in many forms and levels; thus, it is important to learn to recognize and avoid all of them. "Pornography is any entertainment that uses immodest or indecent images to stimulate sexual feelings," explains a New Era article featured on the new Church Web site . "So even a mainstream television program or advertisement can be pornographic. If images trigger sexual feelings in you, you should avoid them." The Chu...
